Tales from the suburbs...

2011 seems special

Well, so far 2011 looks like it will be special in the garden.

I keep seeing wildlife I don't normally see there.. from the beehive to our resident Jay.

Today I've seen several birds I haven't noticed in the garden before. The first was early this morning and I watched the small birds but could not really get to photograph them.

Then this evening I noticed what looked like a great spotted woodpecker out there. I could only grab a snap through a glass window with a strong sunset in the way so the image is very poor.. here it is though for identification purposes:

After that was what looked like perhaps a goldfinch.. I only caught it with my remote control setup and I need more practice at setting that up, as this image shows..

Still, it looks like it may be a special year for seeing things in the garden.. due to all the good weather I suppose.

I have to say I am very happy with the new gadgets I am using in the garden.. I described them on the forums. They include a remote control which I am surprised to find is staying on all day and continuing to work when needed, as is my DSLR camera - as it seems able to turn on only when needed and to go all day without even losing a bar on its battery rating.

The little weather station out there has worked really well, and I got my first rain readings in recent days. I have learnt a fair bit from it.

Have a great bank holiday.. and I hope Manchester United win the Champions League tomorrow...!

Steve

I missed this somehow. Perhaps my route in to the website is not the best but I find it hard to find new blog activity. I think if I read just a part of the website then all sections get marked as read and there may be unread blog entries.

Anyhow your birds are what you thought. We have lots of goldfinches since putting up the nyger seed feeder and the fledglings from this year are just starting to appear.

    John,

We did take out the main Blog link on the menu as nobody had posted to a blog for a month at the time and 'use it or lose it' was applied...

The What's New button does show all blog entries and even comments - so I just came to your message via that.

Also on the right of the forum front page is a blogs widget that shows all the latest entries and allows going to them.

If blogs get used we can add the featuring of them back in within seconds.

I've been watching and photographing the goldfinches a lot now. Haven't seen the woodpecker again sadly. I have been surprised at how much life there is in the garden this year. Way more species out there than in recent years.. which is great.

    All the best,

    Steve
