    Question Filters for DSLR

Now that I'm ready to take the plunge into the DSLR world I was wondering about filters. Do I use the same concepts with a DSLR as I did with my film SLR? For my film SLR, I had UV and polarizing filters. Do I want the same for a DSLR? What filters do you use? TIA

    Paula,

I always put a UV filter on lenses as protection. Just make sure that you get a reasonable quality one and if it is a wide angle lens then it is best to get a thin one to avoid vignetting. I would recommend the HOYA Pro 1 series and shop around as you don't have to pay a fortune for them.

Polarising filters work the same was as they did on film - so get one if you think you'll want to use it. They are very handy for cutting down on reflections as well as the normal sky effects.

What model camera did you decide on?

I LOVED using the polarizing filter so, that will definately be on my list.

I'm 90% sure I'll go with the D90 but will have a good feel of both that and the D5000. Tomorrow is the day!!!

    Paula,

I agree with Andy about the Hoya Pro 1 filters. They're very good value and made in the same factory as some much more expensive brands.

They do a protection filter which is completely clear if you don't specifically need a UV filter.

Make sure your polarising filter is a circular polarising filter, not a linear filter for digital sensors.

Hoya has a 3 filter package for $77 that includes a UV, circular polarizer, and warm filters. I got it and think they will be a good start back into the world of filters.
