    Question Tips for printing

    Dear all,

Can You please tell me tips for printing photos on a 20x30 or 24x36 papers.

I will do printing in a AGFA lab. It's the best in my city.

I want to print still frames shot by RED ONE 4K Digital Cinema camera.

This camera provides 4096 x 2304px resolution. It captures 12-bit RAW data.

    1. What is the difference between glossy and matte paper in resolution, details or something else?

    2. Should I give them max resolution file as 4096x2304px or some other ?

    3. Is there any difference in printing between uncompressed files as TIFFS, PNG, PSD and etc...?

    4. Do I need to sharpen my photos in Photoshop?

    5?

    6?...

Can you please tell me any other TIPS about printing because I realy need maximum quaility on my prints (20x30 or 24x36).

    Thank You

    Philipo,

Some members here do large scale printing so hopefully one will see your message and offer some thoughts.

Personally I hardly ever print anything large. I do have an A3 printer but I mainly use that for printing onto CDs as it can handle that. If I wanted to do what you seem to have in mind I think I'd be asking the AGFA photo lab for advice, and perhaps for some sample prints showing the advantages of this or that way of doing it.

I'd like to welcome you to ukexpert. The closest I have been to your country is Krakow in Poland that I went to for a weekend a year or two back. If you ever visit London do let us know and we can meet you, and go for a drink or show you some sights or whatever seems best.

Welcome again.. and I hope you make some good friends here. Showing us some photos of Belgrade would be great if you have time.

    Philipo,

Thanks for trying to show us what Belgrade is like. I'm afraid that as this is a photo sharing site with a massive photo gallery showing the whole World etc the idea is really to upload images here rather than to link off to them on other photo spots.

I don't know if you have looked at the photo areas here but they are sort of special I think, and if you look you'll see that one of the few countries without photos is Serbia! Nobody from there has ever bothered to upload photos of the place....I do hope you'll find the time to add some photos to show off what is great about Serbia and Belgrade.

Please have a look at the photo areas, they are here: http://www.ukexpert.co.uk/photopost/index.php - and consider if you want to add a few photos or not. It is totally up to you whether you do or not of course. If you do upload photos of Belgrade or other parts of Serbia we will create an area for Serbia and move them in there.

    All the best from London,

    Steve

    Re: Tips for printing

    Hi Philip

I'm guessing those sizes are in centimetres, so the largest is around A3.

For reasonable quality you need about 118 pixels per cm (300 pixels per inch), so - for 24 x 36 you need 2832 x 4248, for 20 x 30 it's 2360 x 3540. Your stills are 2304 x 4096 so just about enough for the smaller size and a bit short for the larger.

Fortunately, larger prints are intended to be viewed from further away than small prints, so you should get away with it. Just.

The differences in "gloss" or "matt" will very much depend on the qualities of the actual materials, but contrast usually appears higher on gloss prints, but reflections can be more troublesome...

File types? You may not be able to detect compression artifacts in high quality jpg images, but many claim to be able to. If you have very high quality images, why compromise them? If they're a little less than the highest quality images, compression may not harm them.

Why not ask the lab? They will be the experts on their particular equipment...

    Re: Tips for printing

    Dear Bob,

This AGFA lab which is the best in my country/city does not have good enough knowledge about printing larger formats. They do all the time smaller prints. They have changed a lot of generations which had known this stuffs. The current generation is filled with young girls.

I've tested 20x30 print in jpg compression beacause the local fujifilm lab does not support uncompressed files. So I could see jpeg artifacts in lowlight sectors.

Steve, I will upload photos of my city and country... Then you move them to new Serbia area.
