    Smile WiFi Photo Frame

    Hi all,

I thought I'd share a little info on a new toy I got.. tis a present for an upcoming birthday.

It cost just £50 plus VAT from Makro and seems to be a clearance item of some sort. It was the last one of this sort at the Makro at Acton. They did have various other Motorola branded frames at the same price.. but not with the abilities of this one. Other branches may still have stock. The Makro Web site is here: http://www.makro.co.uk/servlet/PB/menu/-1_l2/index.html - though it seems not to have details of this frame.

The product is the Motorola LS1000W photo frame. I think the makers name is just licensed.

I looked a little on the Web and Amazon have one left in stock for £150 here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hama-0009523.../dp/B002L4KQ52

M&S say they are out of stock but give details on what it can do here: http://www.marksandspencer.com/Motor.../dp/B0031ATWGO

I've tried quite a few of its features since getting it yesterday, though not all of them as it does a lot.

At this moment it is playing a slideshow of photos that I emailed to it...! Also it is playing MP3 music from a Now album I got onto it by plugging in a USB stick and telling it to copy the music to its internal 500mb storage. It is quite happy to play photos and music from a plugged in stick and it seems nice and flexible.

I used medium photos from here on ukexpert, simply right clicking on them and choosing to email them from the options offered. I sent them all to an email account I created for the frame. It recommends gmail but I just used one of our own domains.

It screens photos arriving and only displays those from email addresses you have told it about in advance. Neat, so SPAM will never show on the frame etc etc.

The only thing that doesn't seem to work is the system it has for playing Web music. It seems the app address it uses has changed and there is no update being offered. I suspect I could find a way around that but I probably won't be trying as it isn't something I need or want particularly.

I set it to look at RSS (a content syndicating system) on ukexpert and it duly showed all the latest updates to the photo area with links to each item. It didn't display the photos though and I'd probably have to find a way to change something at the ukx end to make that work.. I know it can do that with some services/sites as it displayed the Yahoo news stories with an image against each in its default setting.
The RSS system works fine in ie8 etc.. the link is here incase anyone wonders about such stuff: http://www.ukexpert.co.uk/photopost/....php?type=RSS2

So, a clear neat 10inch screen that works via WiFi and can get photos and music from you via email or via USB or things like SD cards too.. Oh, and it has a remote control, and that is how you enter info and make choices and change the volume etc. It also has some buttons on the back you can use.

I'd enjoy being somewhere like the USA and making photos from there appear on the UK screen by emailing them to it etc...sounds like fun...

I hope the info is helpful.. I may have it running at some forthcoming meets with it showing prize winning photos from ukexpert or something like that.

It does lots more by the way so do check out the links for it above... it for instance can display a clock and calendar with changing photos included... or work as an alarm.. I think it can even perhaps turn itself on and off at set times..

    Steve
