New Lens

I'm thinking of buying my son a new zoom lens for Xmas.
He has a Canon 1000D.
I'm thinking of getting http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-EF-S-5...dp_ob_title_ce
from Amazon, but know nothing really about lenses, does this one look OK?
He only has one lens at the moment, an EF-S 18-55mm.

I haven't used one but going by what I've read it seems good value for money.

It's in the EF-S series so can only be used with APS-C sized sensors like the 1000D (and x0D series and 7D). It's autofocus and stabilisation are good.
