    Post Windows 8 expected launch

I see that Microsoft have announced that Windows 8 will launch to retail in October, TechNet and OEMs will see it earlier.

There is talk that Microsoft will doing download upgrade to Windows 8 Pro from XP onwards for a limited period for $39.99, a backup DVD $9.99.

If you are an MSDN subscriper, you can download it now.
I've not had time to do this yet - but if I have time will try and do it for the BBQ

I've set up Windows 8 on a laptop, but it's very flacky, seems to be a problem with the graphics driver.
If I can resolve this issue I'll bring it along to the BBQ.

    Walter,
I've had to remove it from the laptop as it proved un-usable.

Some years ago I installed Vista on my laptop and removed it for the same reasons as you and Windows 8, I miss VISTA and stayed with XP and then went to Windows 7.

Windows 8 was really un-usable. Every time I tried to switch user I had to force a re-boot, when trying to use Internet Explorer the screen went all white and all I could see was outlines of any frames.
Vista on the other hand was fine on my PC, you needed a fairly powerful PC to run Vista.

I'm not planning to downgrade to Windows 8 in the near future. Are there new useful features apart from the tablet stuff?

    Re: Windows 8 expected launch

    Walter,

I expect everyone will have their own views on whether upgrading to Windows 8 is worthwhile.

I personally tend to leave my computers running the operating systems that I get with them when I buy them. That way I save a lot of time, everything seems to work as intended, I spend zero on operating systems, etc etc. This message is from a machine running XP.... and it works just fine. I have various machines here all running different operating systems.

Operating systems and software in general often seem to get worse with each upgrade.. with new problems being introduced etc. The main reason for constant new versions is to make money from us all obviously... it is not about some super new discovery or whatever as they never seem to put money into finding truly new things to do with computers.

I've been wanting a new PC for some time now and keep putting it off... it is tempting to get one at this moment as Windows 8 can be on it from Friday... and the recent i7 Ivybridge machines seem neat..and there are lots of new IPS monitors starting to come out... Such a machine probably won't be out of date until next year when the already announced replacement Intel chips come along..

One thing that really annoys me is how useless our computer makers/sellers are.. all these huge stores claiming to be all about computers etc.. and packed with incredibly old obsolete trash from years back... not one super i7 Windows 8 machine with a great monitor and orders being taken for Friday delivery etc. They all deserve to go bust cos they are so so useless at what they do these days...

My favourite version of Windows is still XP; the rest is just bloat ware!
I agree with you on the rubbish (in my opinion) that is crammed on new PCs.

    Walter,

At the university we have been running XP for as long as I can remember. But Microsoft keep announcing its end of life so we have begun to move our main users over to Windows 7. Having looked at the previews of Windows 8 I don't see any reason to switch to that except for specialist needs such as touch screen support. I imagine we'll skip the next couple of versions and stay with 7 for a few years.

    John
Just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

I think Microsoft end of support and any security updates will end early 2013.

    Bring back XP
