Hello All
I am looking at buying a D70 or D50, the main differences that i can see when comparing them on the Jessops website is that the D70 has 'depth of field' preview, could anyone tell me what this means. Sorry I'm still learning.
Thanks
Lee

Lee,
If you go for a D70 then I would suggest you buy the later D70s model. The D50 is a more recent model and is slightly smaller than the 70. The D50 uses SD cards where the 70 uses compact flash.
The 'depth of field' preview button allows you to view the scene as it will be taken so that you can see what is in focus and what isn't. But this also darkens the view so that it can be hard to see.
There is a good demo here:
http://www.photozone.de/3Technology/demos/DOFbutton.htm hover over the F numbers below the photos to see the effect.
I would go to a shop and handle both cameras (and others!) and then make your choice.

Lee,
I have just bought a D50 and am delighted with it - much cheaper than the D70S and not a lot of difference. Of course, the differences may be more important to you than to me! Depth of field preview has been dealt with already - another difference is the higher "burst rate" of the D70S - in other words the speed at which the camera can shoot continuously (for a limited number of frames) like with a motor drive on a film camera. The D70S will shoot at 4 frames per second (fps) whilst the D50 "only" manages 2.5 fps. Only a problem if you're into sports or other action photography - most of my shots are of fairly static subjects. Another factor is availability - I was quoted a delivery time of "at least" 6 weeks for a D70S
Hope this helps
Mike
Thankyou everyone
I think the D50 will be the way forward, theres one on Ebay with the lens at the mo for £450 its the UK model and is new, its being sold by a private seller so i will take the precaution of going to pay for it cash face to face so i can check it out first if thats the way i decide to go. I think this is a good price but i would be v interested if anyone has seen one from a shop at a similar price.
Lee
To check out prices I tend to look at things in Kelkoo....so in this case I'd be looking at this: http://www.kelkoo.co.uk/ctl/do/searc...uery=nikon+d50Originally Posted by Leebob

Giving cash to a stranger at an arranged meeting point isn't the safest of things to do is it.
Personally I tend to try and buy from well known stores, and to use things like credit cards to try and help ensure I may have a chance of getting my money back if they go broke or whatever.
I've never used them or had any dealings with them, but I see Warehouse Express seem to have some sort of offer on the D50 perhaps ending today... http://www.warehouseexpress.com/inde...ras/Nikon.html

Lee,
http://www.cameraworld.co.uk/ are showing it for £499 including cashback. I'm not saying they are the only place to get it, but that does show that you should not need to pay much more than that Ebay price. I would always buy new gear from a real shop / dealer if possible. If you wanted to use Jessops they usually price match if you take the ad / printout with you.
Andy
I've bought lots of bits 'n' pieces from Warehouse Express (batteries, filters, adapters) as well as a Sigma lens and they were fast and reliable. They seemed to have stock on scarce items when others didn't.Originally Posted by Steve

Lee,
If as Andy says the difference is only £50 I would certainly be buying from the shop with a lot more certainty of getting things put right if there were problems.
Mike
Thanks again everyone
Do Jessops pricematch from online retailers? if so i will print out the cameraworld ad and take it in. I must admit i am getting a little excited now!
Lee
Thanks for the info. I've always tended to use DABS for small items in the past, but those folks came up when I did a quick search on offers on the camera...and I know some here have said they've used them in the past.Originally Posted by jhr
There seem to be oodles of places about with those cameras at good prices, so hopefully no need to go for one for cash and perhaps without guarantees etc.

I will always ask any retailer for a price match , they may even say they do price match.
You have nothing to loose by asking.![]()
All Sorted
Got a pricematched deal from Jessops, brand new 12 month warranty and £50 cash back (last day of the offer today) so thanks one and all. I have spent the last few hours testing it and and although the manual has made me feel like a 5 yr old, it is obviously a fantastic piece of kit and i look forward to posting some pics when i get some decent ones, instead of those of my cat and the light fittings etcetc
Speak to you all again soon
regards
Lee

Did you get a D50 then, or a D70(s)? Or did I miss something?
Mike
Lee,
Good to hear that you got the deal you wanted. Have fun with the camera and we'll look forward to seeing the photos.
Andy
Hi Touchwood
It was a D50 in the end, my experience and budget, as well as the fact that I could carry on using my sd cards swung the balance in the end.
