    Question Cold weather

    Hi all,

I shall be going snowboarding this winter and I would like to take my 350D with me. I've never taken it to any particularily cold places so could anyone tell me whether there might be problems with doing so? I'm aware of the risk of dropping it in snow and so on but I'm more worried about the effects of the actual temperatures.

    Thanks,
    Karol

I think battery life tends to be cut down quite a bit shorter in colder temperatures.

I use my 350d in sub zero temperatures regularly, with no real side effects.

In fact it can benefit images as noise doubles in amount for every 7°C rise in

    temperature.

If you are worried about the effects of cold weather on the batteries I'd

suggest buying a Canon BG-E3 battery grip, then you can double the battery

    capacity for your camera.

    Karol,

Canon are probably the people to give you the definitive answer as to what you can and can't do with one of their cameras, I'm sure you'd agree.

Their Web pages on such things seem to start here: http://www.canon-europe.com/

...the FAQ on 'freezing' etc seems to say your camera is designed to only work above freezing. You may want to read all they say and perhaps even ask them a direct question.

I've personally never let my cameras get very cold, always protecting them well. I'd worry about water vapour and condensation and so on caused by very cold conditions.

If I want to take photos in cold places I do though, and just recently I was at the top of a mountain taking photos in snow with no bother at all.. but the camera never got really cold.. and neither did I.

Those Canon advice/info pages seem to mainly mention the batteries don't they... with talk of keeping them warm and of potential problems if they are very cold etc etc.

    Steve
