The best thing anyone can do with a new camera is to get out and take as many images as possible.
Try to use different settings on the same subject and compare the results.
Don't be afraid to experiment, after all it doesn't cost anything to delete an image.![]()
Start off by taking images in Auto mode till you get a feel for the camera, once you are a bit more confident try program mode.
Hope that helps a bit.

1st things 1st and do what "MOST" of us never do - read the manual, there really is some good tips in them for a 1st time slr user, then like brian says, take loads of pics and compare, take pics at different shutter speeds and apertures and see what results you get, read up about the histogram (think its on the 20D) that tells you a lot about the exposure of the image taken and you can work from it
Thank you Brian.
Thank you for your help. Kenfuj1
I have a 20D as well as my 30D and in both cases use them like any other camera which has user modes as well as automatic. I mostly use the Av setting (aperture priority), and occasionally use manual, programme or shutter priority depending on the situation.
If I'm not sure if I got a good exposure I look at it on the lcd with the info turned on so I can see the histogram.
As Kenfuj1 says the 20D manual is useful and does have general help on taking photos as well as specific information about the 20D, and if you are intersted in a particular kind of photography, get a book on it. There's lots to be learned from standard SLR photography books before you get on to the particulars of digital photography.
It's 40 years since I got my first SLR and I'm still learning
