Hello 2007! Sold my first photo!

Been busy typing up my dissertation over Christmas and new year so not had much time to get on here or do anything with my camera. The dissertation is now sitting in a shop being binded so can relax a little before getting on with the design work!

Anyway, this post is a little thank you to ukexpert for passing on an email to me that came to the site regarding one of my photos, which resulted in my first photo sale!

We regularly pass on 'business proposals' and 'leads' that come in to ukexpert like this, it is good to see someone actually take one to a sale and and then say so here etc. Well done!

It was good to get the original message/proposal in asking to use the photo they had seen on ukexpert..and to be able to pass the lead to you and to try and help a little bit with the questions you had re making a sale etc too.

I'm glad it worked out well for you.

Photos here are often viewed by vast numbers of people, so it is to be expected that we will get enquiries re using photos. Your photos here have been viewed 295,000 times so far... and you haven't been taking many for some time due to Uni work...!

The more good quality photos you have here the better your chances of something like this happening of course... and the most enquiries we get in for photo use are for Andy and my photos.. as we have the most on here.

I tend to say no thanks to most requests with mine - I hate the naff contracts American publishers tend to want agreed for small fees etc...and like my quiet life.. Andy tends to arrange free usage of his photos by folks he approves of.. and he has had photos in several magazines, on book covers, in newspapers, in calendars, etc etc... all because of the high profile exposure of his photos here on ukexpert.

We tend to ignore the badly written no info trash proposals that come in at times.. but when something looks properly put together and real, as that proposal from the Federation of Small Businesses did, we have to date always passed the lead on to the member who originally uploaded the photo, so they can see if they can do a direct deal with the interested party.

I'll just explain that when we do that the member is selling some rights to the copy of the photo they took and own..and they should provide a copy of the photo to the buyer... they aren't actually selling any rights to a copy anyone may have downloaded from ukexpert. It is a subtle difference.. but an important one. Nobody can legally sell/use any material actually taken from ukexpert without written permission from ukexpert to do so, as ukexpert owns all of its content as we are all aware. Material on here is actually protected in some subtle ways, and if down the line anyone anywhere is found 'publishing' any of it then they will of course be held legally responsible for that.

The photo on here that grabbed those folks attention was one of your very neat ones wasn't it.. you certainly do have an eye for photography Simon.. for anyone who wonders what the original upload looks like here it is:



...so the original is actually a lot better than the Web site version.

What else can I say.. well making a little from selling a photo with some help from ukexpert is neat and I'm glad you have.. but it seems worth saying that like most here, the main money you have made from your photography has probably come from other things to do with ukexpert..

In your case that would be several hundred pounds worth of prizes, and a number of great subscriber meets where meals/costs/entrance fees/room hire etc have been paid for by ukx, and then of course a little help with getting your new camera out of the makers...when the old one broke after several years use... thinking about it I know you have even had some paid photography related work due to being a member here.

Of course the friends you've made here are priceless aren't they...

Geeze don't you do well out of being here.... ... I think the same sort of things are true of most keen ukexpert subscribers, and that's great isn't it...
